India’s ASTRA space observatory, launched in 2024, has made a rare discovery of a “rogue planet” — a planet not orbiting any star — in a dark patch of the Sagittarius constellation. The object, named Rakshak-1, appears to have a magnetic field 100 times stronger than Earth’s and emits low-frequency radiation. Scientists believe such rogue planets may support underground liquid water. ISRO plans to collaborate with NASA for joint study. The discovery places India among the few countries actively researching free-floating planetary bodies.
